Attention: Mr. Inglewick (2012 version) - 14'51"
This video is comprised of a set of closeups of the names and addresses on a set of 96 letters sent to my father, Brunoslavs Ingelevics, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Most are addressed to him at Smith Transport, the trucking company he was working for at the time.
I only found these envelopes in 2001, after he passed away. He had kept these as a kind of joke about how often his name was misspelled (often wildly so) in those years. As I no longer have my name distorted in the way he did, I wondered what kind of passive-aggressive, social message was being sent at that time by those who seemed unable or uninterested in spelling his name correctly.
The wave of Eastern European immigrants to Canada in the early 1950s were treated with contempt by many in Canada and were only grudgingly allowed in to the country. I suspect that these misspellings are the residue of that time.
