The Museum Projects
• Camera Obscured: Photographic Documentation and the Public Museum
(1997-2004)
Camera Obscured was one of the first exhibitions to explore the content of the institutional photographic archives of a range of major public museums.
• The Metropolitan Museum of Edward Milla
(2000-2007)
This exhibition project looked at the appearance (and disappearance) of the 1951 exhibition, Up at the Photographers, that that the Met's chief photographer, Edward Milla, produced on the occasion of his 50th year employed at the museum.
• Between art & Art (2000-2018)
In this work I revisited many of the public museums in which I had done archive research earlier and produced my own large format photographs, mimicking the content of images made by the museum's own past photographers in order to examine the instability of photographic meaning.
The three projects are linked by a common concern with exploring from different perspectives museums' photographic documentation of their own activities and its significnce in the representation of the histories of museums.

This video was created originally as a PowerPoint in 2009 to present at the Association of Historical and Fine Art Photographers conference in London, UK. In 2020 I transferred it to video and annotated many of the slides to add commentary I would have made in person at the conference as well as to update my thoughts on some of the material.
