Regarding Space (2017-18)
The two-person exhibition, Regarding Space, brings together separately-created bodies of work by American artist, Cynthia Greig, and Canadian Vid Ingelevics in a unique conceptual collaboration that builds upon their mutual interest in the signifying potential of the architecture devoted to the dissemination of western contemporary art.
Museums interpret history and material culture through their collection, presentation and conservation of objects and images; commercial art galleries exhibit contemporary art works as commodities while promoting their cultural relevance and economic value. In their large-scale color images, the artists shift focus away from the objects intended for our view to exhibition spaces themselves.
The artists also address the specificity of the site where this exhibition has been presented. Through printing archivally-sourced works on high quality vinyl and the use of “imageless” projections the artists acknowledge the site of presentation. The viewer has the opportunity not only to reflect on the institutional spaces depicted in their photographs but also upon the space in which the viewing of these images takes place. In this way, the exhibition is a site-specific installation in which the artists regard the architecture of presentation as part of their work.
